In 2000, the government began to build a nationwide internet firewall, namely notorious the Great Firewall (GFW), to block China netizens to access specific websites, such as Falungong's websites (see 264).

In the first ten years, GFW was relatively inefficient. Just using an foreign proxy server, for example, 18.181.231.173:3128 (in Tokyo Japan), you could break through GFW and reach your destination website.

After 2010, GFW became more and more efficient. Today, you absolutely can't break through GFW, unless using special anti-blocking software, such as Shadowsocks. I installed three software in my computer.

Now the government has blocked almost all famous websites, including Google, YouTube, Faceboook, Twitter, Instagram, Wikipedia, even GitHub. People often call China's network "intranet", not internet.
