There is a popular saying in China: buchenggong bianchengren (不成功便成仁), meaning that you had better defeat your enemy, if you can't defeat your enemy, you had better commit suicide.

Why suicide? Because if you are caught alive by your enemy, you will be humiliated endlessly. When Saddam Hussein appeared in court in July 2004, people first thought of this saying.

Another popular saying in China is: chengzhewanghou baizhezei (成者王侯败者贼), meaning that the winner will be an admirable king and the loser will be a contemptible thief.

People initially sympathized with Saddam Hussein. When people saw him being defeated, running away, and hiding in a hole like a rat, people turned to think him a contemptible thief.

[NOTE] People (including me) always use Chinese sayings to evaluate foreign personages and events.
