In 2001, General Chang Hsueh-liang (张学良), one of the most controversial figures in modern Chinese history, died in the United States at the age of 100.


Back to 1936, the army of then President Chiang Kai-shek (蒋介石) was encircling communist guerrillas, and it was likely to annihilate this rebellious group.


But people never expected that General Chang launched a coup d'etat in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province on December 12 of this year and detained President Chiang.


Although President Chiang was released later, the operations to eliminate communists was cancelled, and they got an once-in-a-lifetime resurrective opportunity.
