Before 2000, all famous singers of Hong Kong and Taiwan landed on China's music (record) market, making big money which they absolutely could not make in their local markets.

HK's musicians were particularly astute. Every HK hit song they composed had 2 different versions -- a Cantonese version for local fans, and a Mandarin version for China's fans.

All HK and TW singers are extremely careful, they avoided commenting on China's political affairs, and avoided offending China's skeptical and sensitive government.

Despite the carefulness, some singers were still banned, for example, A Mei (张惠妹), who sang TW's national anthem during TW president's inauguration ceremony.
